Scholarship Details

What does the scholarship cover?

The scholarship covers tuition, board and lodging, but not additional costs such as pocket money or travel costs to and from the school (the opportunity to travel home is normally provided during a 2-3 month summer holiday and during a 3-6 week winter holiday). However, in rare, exceptional cases it is possible to receive an additional grant from UWC Sverige for travel, but often the schools themselves have financial support available for travel costs. Students are also entitled to a study grant from Centrala studiestödsnämnden (CSN), which in 2023 amounts to SEK 1,250 per month. We do not expect this grant to be paid to UWC Sverige.

More information curated specifically for parents and guardians can be found here.

Accommodation grant from CSN (Inackorderingstillägg)

Importantly, our scholarship holders are entitled to an accommodation grant from the Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN) because they are studying far from their home. The grant is intended to contribute to the cost of food and lodging for high school students who do not live where they are registered (folkbokförd). The magnitude of the accommodation grant varies depending on the distance between the place of registration and the place of study and corresponds to approximately SEK 2000-2500 per month. Since food and lodging is covered by the scholarship we provide, each scholarship recipient or guardian of a scholarship recipient is required to apply for and then transfer the amount of the accommodation grant to UWC Sverige.

Discussion about parental contributions

The selection is made without regard to the ability of the applicants and their parents to pay, in accordance with UWC's mission, students are selected solely on their personal merits. Contributions from parents are gratefully received so that we can continue to give Swedish students the opportunity to attend UWC.

During the nomination process, we discuss with the parents how much they can contribute. The basis for this discussion is what it would have cost to have a 17-year-old at home during the 18 months a UWC education lasts. The starting point for the discussion is that parents or guardians pay at least SEK 3,000 per month, which is roughly equivalent to the food costs of having a teenager at home according to the Swedish Consumer Agency. This amount is in addition to the accommodation grant from CSN. The more contributions we receive, the more students we can send. However, parents' willingness and ability to contribute will never affect our ranking of candidates.

Summary
  • UWC scholarships are awarded without regard to the applicants' ability to pay.
  • The scholarship is comprehensive for all selected candidates, regardless of the school to which the student is sent.
  • The scholarship covers tuition, accomodation and food.
  • It does not cover pocket money or travel to and from school.
  • Since the scholarship holder is studying far from their home town, they are entitled to apply for an accommodation grant from CSN. These accommodation grant must be paid to UWC Sverige every month.
  • In addition to the accommodation grant, we expect parents to contribute what it would have cost to have a 17-year-old at home during the 18 months a UWC education lasts. This is not a strict requirement on our part, but it allows us to continue awarding scholarships to Swedish students in the future.
  • The student is always entitled to apply for and keep the study grant from CSN, which currently amounts to SEK 1 250 per month.
