For Parents & Guardians
Here we have gathered information for parents
This includes information on the UWC Sverige scholarship, CSN and interviews with parents whose children attended UWC through UWC Sverige. All scholarship recipients are awarded a full scholarship. The scholarship includes tuition, board and lodging (study, food and housing costs). UWC Sverige therefore encourages parents to contribute a food allowance equivalent to what it would cost to have a teenager living at home.
Since applicants to UWC are under 18, parental approval is needed to be admitted to UWC and receiving our scholarship.
Online information session for parents
As a parent, you probably want to know more about UWC and about letting your child live abroad. During and the application process, UWC Sverige holds several information sessions for parents and guardians.
Follow us on Facebook and register for our emails in order not to miss future information sessions. On this website you can also read interviews with Maria Sandum and Anders Pihl, whose daughter attended UWC Li Po Chun, and Christina and Jonas Löwgren, whose two daughters attended UWC Red Cross Nordic. They share their experiences and impressions of UWC.
Accommodation grant and food allowance
As a guardian of a selected Swedish UWC scholar, you will be asked to sign a financial commitment. It aims to ensure clear communication between UWC Sverige and guardian and contains three parts:
- Accommodation grant from CSN
- Food allowance
- A request for a voluntary contribution to UWC Sverige
On the page Scholarship Details you can read more about the first two points. Below you can download the two official documents that govern the financial commitment between parents and UWC Sweden. The financial commitment becomes relevant only after your child has been offered a scholarship.
All work within UWC Sverige is done on a voluntary basis. Your contribution is highly appreciated and helps to secure future scholarships for young people in Sweden. Therefore, parents are asked to, if they can, contribute with a so-called food allowance to UWC Sverige's activities. The food allowance corresponds to what it costs to have a teenage boy/girl living in the household for the duration of a UWC education (18 months). According to the Swedish Consumer Agency in 2023 this amount is around 3000 SEK/month. A school year at UWC lasts just over 9 months (4 months of fall semester and 5 months of spring semester), which gives a total annual amount of approximately 27 000 SEK.
Parents of applicants will never be income tested by UWC Sverige or have their personal finances investigated in a similar manner. It is our principle to only work with the information that parents voluntarily communicate to us. The parents' willingness and ability to contribute never affects our ranking of the candidates at during the selection process.
Give more young people the opportunity to attend UWC
In addition to the accommodation grant and food allowance, we would like guardians to contribute, if possible, an additional sum to be used for future scholarships. This is an extremely important part of the funding of the scholarships and enables more young people to have the opportunity to study at a UWC.
Voluntary contributions - regardless of size - make a big difference to the ability of more students to attend a United World College! Read more about how we welcome support here.
